What Is Scale, and Why Is It a Problem?

Scale is the hard, chalky deposit that forms inside pipes, tanks, and heating elements when water contains high levels of dissolved minerals—primarily calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals solidify and coat the internal surfaces of equipment, reducing performance and causing wear or failure.

For commercial steam-generating equipment, like the Optima Steamer, scale buildup isn’t just inconvenient—it’s destructive. Because the boiler and key fittings are made of stainless steel, prolonged exposure to mineral scale creates a corrosive environment that eats away at metal surfaces, especially the heating elements and interior boiler walls. In some cases, this type of corrosion can begin in as little as 3 to 4 months.

And here’s the kicker: damage caused by scale is not covered under warranty, as it’s considered a preventable maintenance issue.

Without water softening, some operators would need to perform descaling maintenance every 3 to 5 days (depending on water hardness). Descaling is time-consuming, potentially damaging if done incorrectly, and can reduce the longevity of internal components.

Why Steam Equipment Is More Vulnerable Than Household Appliances

Unlike home dishwashers or kettles that see occasional use, industrial steamers heat water to extreme temperatures continuously in pressurized, closed-loop boilers. In these environments, dissolved minerals don’t exit the system with the water—they stay behind and bake onto internal surfaces.

Key problems caused by scale in steamers:

• Corrosion of stainless steel boiler and fittings
• Heater elements become coated and overheat
• Extended heat-up times and poor steam recovery
• Sensor malfunctions (water probes, TDS sensors)
• Permanent boiler damage and shortened equipment life

Scale is a problem in many water-based appliances, but steamers are uniquely vulnerable because they continuously reuse water and operate at extremely high temperatures. By contrast:

• Pressure washers shoot water out before scale builds up
• Water heaters don’t boil water or reuse it in a closed system
• Dishwashers do suffer from scale, but don’t operate under high pressure

The Wrong Water Can Also Damage Your Steamer

Using the wrong type of water can be just as harmful as not softening it. For example:

• DI water (deionized) is highly reactive and will damage metal components rapidly
• RO (reverse osmosis) or distilled water has too low of a TDS (typically under 15 ppm) and will prevent the steamer from functioning properly
• Adding chemicals to water is risky, especially since steamers vaporize that water—potentially allowing those chemicals to be inhaled

For this reason, the Optima Steamer requires very specific water conditions:

• Neutral pH
• Total Hardness < 0.1 ppm
• TDS between 15–40 ppm

How Hard Is Your Water? U.S. Water Hardness by Region

According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), about 85% of homes in the U.S. have hard water, with some areas reaching over 250 ppm of hardness. Here’s a snapshot:

How Water Softeners Work (and What They Don’t Do)

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange, replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions. The result is water that no longer produces scale.

However, softeners do not remove TDS (total dissolved solids). That’s why it’s still important to monitor TDS levels even after softening. Additionally, water hardness affects how quickly the softener becomes exhausted. The harder the water, the sooner the softener needs to be recharged.
