FAQ: Water Softening Solutions (and the Omega)

Determining Which Softening Solution is Best for You

Depending on how hard (or soft) your water is, there are various treatment options to ensure proper operation and minimal exposure to scale. So what are the solutions and which is best for you? Read on.

TDS IS 10-40 PPM?

TOTAL HARDNESS GREATER THAN 1 GPG?

USING WELL WATER?

REVERSE OSMOSIS OR DEIONIZED WATER?

Get steaming! Your water is in the ideal range of Total Dissolved Solids and scale shouldn’t be a problem. Keep an eye out for white, hard water stains on steam gun nozzles and other outlets, but you shouldn’t really need to descale your boiler more than once per year.

You will need a water softening solution for trouble-free operation and a long lifespan. We recommend speaking with a water treatment specialist, but below are some pointers to help steer you in the right direction.

Because wells can contain such a wide variety of minerals and concentration, we highly recommend speaking to a water treatment specialist. While a softener might be recommended, you may also need some filtration and other passes to make the water safe for repeated use with the Optima.

If your facility has a treatment system that uses RO (reverse osmosis) or DI (deionized), you may actually have problems because your water is TOO PURE. The Optima Steamer runs a current through the water for various safety systems and purified water will NOT conduct electricity–thus, your Optima will encounter errors. You will need to either find a way to reduce the level of purification or to add particulates that will raise the ppm of the water.
